Playoff Predictions

By Ryan Mink

It’s time once again for the Maryland playoffs so I came up with the idea of predicting the results NCAA basketball style.

For now, I predicted only the 4A and 3A for the four major spring sports since there aren’t many 2A or 1A Montgomery County teams and I don’t have much familiarity with the non-MCPS teams in those classifications.

Of course, I’m sure that I’ll get plenty of these wrong and it’s nothing against any team. Treat this as a fun way to follow the tournament. I stress that I DO NOT CARE who wins these games at all — even if it spoils my bracket.

Without further ado, here are my brackets. Click on each one to see my picks.

BRACKETS

4A Baseball
3A Baseball
4A Softball
3A Softball
4A/3A Boys Lacrosse
3A/2A Boys Lacrosse
4A/3A Girls Lacrosse
3A/2A Girls Lacrosse

TOUGHEST BRACKET: 4A Baseball
Baseball is just so hard to predict. Just about any team can beat any other. In the 4A West I thought four teams have a good shot at winning the region — Sherwood, Northwest, Whitman, Wootton and Quince Orchard. I could also see Gaithersburg and Blake could definitely be a Cindarella as well.

HARDEST CALL:
Baseball – Sherwood over Quince Orchard
Quince Orchard beat Sherwood, 3-0, in their regular season meeting but I’m predicting some playoff magic for Sherwood again this season. In the playoffs it all comes down to pitching and I believe the Warriors have the deepest staff in the county.

UPSET CENTRAL: Girls Lax – No. 3 Walter Johnson over No. 2 Blake
Ok, so it’s not a major upset by any means, but this game could be huge (if it happens of course). Both teams are playing extremely well lately. WJ just has too many offensive weapons I think.

ALL THE WAY: Damascus baseball
If I have to pick one Montgomery County team to win a state championship — other than B-CC gymnastics — I would take Damascus baseball. The Hornets have been struggling a bit as of late but they have a deadly lineup and enough solid pitching to take down anyone.
